Dark mode: when it sells and when it gets in the way

A premium dark UI does not suit every niche. Here is who gains real value from dark mode and who is better off staying on the light side.

A dark interface instantly reads as “premium” — which is why every other brief asks for one. But dark mode is a tool with a well-defined scope, not a universal upgrade.

Who dark mode genuinely suits

  • Portfolios and showcases: the work glows against dark, just like in a gallery.
  • Products used in the evening — streaming, gaming, trading.
  • Brands where contrast and drama belong: studios, events, technology.

Where it gets in the way

Long-form text is harder to read on dark — eyes tire faster. That is why blogs, documentation and e-commerce with large catalogues almost always win on a light background.

The compromise we love: a light base with dark accent sections. The page gains rhythm and drama while readability stays intact. This is exactly how our own site is built.
